"MOPS was my saving grace when I moved here from Minnesota as it has led me to closest group of friends. When I felt disconnected to this new town, MOPS plugged me into the community in such a fast way. It’s also provided me with so many great resources and knowledge about motherhood that I otherwise wouldn’t have known about!"

"It has led me to my closest group of friends"

Emma Schuman

"Two years ago our family moved cross country to Portland with zero connections. I was somewhat familiar with the ministry of MOPs and just decided to give it a try. MOPS became the place where I found the deep meaningful connection and much needed relief that I was so desperately searching for. I look forward to every meeting where I get the chance to engage in uninterrupted conversations with other moms in the same season of life. MOPs has brought me to my closest friends in Portland and it has truly made us feel like we’ve found a home here. I am so grateful for MOPS and what it has done for me during motherhood."

"MOPS has brought me to my closest friends in Portland"

Jen Coleman

"Being a military spouse means it can be pretty difficult to find friends at each new duty station. MOPS has always been a dependable way for me to meet new people, surround my kids with friends, and build a supportive community that I can rely on. Without MOPS, our military lifestyle would be very isolating and lonely. However, since I’ve always joined a MOPS group, I’ve always felt comfortable in a new place and that has been the greatest gift to me and my children."

"Surround my kids with friends, and build a supportive community that I can rely on"

Angelica Smith

"MOPS has been a through-line for me as I walked through the first year of motherhood living away from family and friends. Over the years, MOPS has given me some of my most treasured relationships and support. Gathering with fellow moms in the same season of life as me—be that over good food, listening to an encouraging speaker, or over conversation at a playdate—has been such a gift. The community MOPS has given me is among one of my biggest blessings."

"Over the years, MOPS has given me some of my most treasured relationships"

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE MOM CO?

The Mom Co is an international Christian ministry backed by MOPS International with chapters all over the globe. The Mom Co, short for; The Mom Community, is a group of mothers who gather together with a common goal to cultivate genuine sisterhood between mothers of young children in our local community. We host monthly meetings that cover a wide range of topics that relate to womanhood, friendship and motherhood. In addition, we host monthly social events we call “Mom’s Night Out” and occasional group playdates.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD DO IN CHILDCARE?

Your children will be cared for by experienced, vetted and background checked women. In childcare at The Mom Co, they will do arts & crafts, play games, read books, enjoy a snack & form their own little friendships! Toddlers & preschoolers will also get a recess time outside weather permitting.

WHAT HAPPENS AT MOM CO MEETINGS?

Our meetings start with a communal brunch and warm drinks. We spend the first portion of the meeting simply enjoying a meal together and catching up. Then we have a guest speaker join us to speak on that month’s theme. After our speaker concludes, we spend time in our tables discussing the topic and really getting to know each other on a deeper level. Some meetings also include crafts or activities that relate to that month’s topic.

WHERE DO WE MEET?

We meet at East River Fellowship, formerly Rock Creek Church.

ARE SPOTS LIMITED?

Spots are not limited for women but we do have a max capacity in our childcare rooms. So if you plan to register your child in our childcare, we would recommend registering ASAP.

WHEN DOES IT START & HOW LONG DOES IT GO?

Official meetings start in September and run almost parallel to the public school year, ending in May. There are 8 meetings total. However, invitations to member events begin as soon as you register in the Summer.

CAN MY BABY STAY WITH ME DURING MEETINGS?

Yes, babies under a year old may stay with you during the meeting. We do ask that if your child starts to make a disturbance that you temporarily take them into the hall until they calm down out of respect to our speakers. All children over a year old that attend meetings must be registered in our childcare.

HOW OLD DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE?

You can register as soon as you‘re expecting! The change from MOPS to The Mom Co has opened the door for mothers of any age kiddos to be included. However, most of the topics will remain relevant to children under 10. Also keep in mind, we only offer childcare for children 0 through 6 years old.

WHY WOULDN’T I REGISTER MY CHILD IN CHILDCARE?

You may not register your child in our childcare if your child is in daycare on our meeting days or if they are in school full time!

WHAT IS MOMS NIGHT OUT?

Mom’s Night Out is an extra event that we host monthly at varying locations. It is either at a member’s home or we all meet out somewhere. This is a fun night that provides an opportunity for members to come together sans kiddos & get to know each other better! For the most part, MNOs will be free events with the exception of a few that will have supply costs for a specific activity. The cost of any given MNO will not exceed $20.

WHERE DO MEMBERSHIP DUES GO TO?

Firstly, $37 goes to your membership with MOPS International which is required to run our group & have access to all the curriculum. Included in that membership is a Mom Co magazine subscription & access to all their online resources. The rest of your base price goes to group registration fees, speaker gifts, snacks for the children, coffee & creamers, tableware, supplies for crafts & activities and miscellaneous small items that we need to run The Mom Co. The entirety of the childcare cost on top of the base cost goes directly to paying our childcare workers a fair wage. The Mom Co Portland is a non-profit & everyone on the leadership team are unpaid volunteers.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN?

The cost to join varies by the number of children you register in our childcare during our meetings. The base membership fee for the year is $130 and each child adds on a cost to that base fee. Dues will be paid all at once this year in August. For more information on dues, check out the “Membership Dues” tab on our website.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO LOWER MY DUES?

This year we are offering an opportunity to the women with children registered in our childcare to lower your dues by volunteering in one of our childcare rooms during one meeting of the year. This would reduce your membership dues by $70 overall. This is a serious commitment and will require a signed contract in order to ensure we always have proper childcare coverage. Please note this opportunity is only available to members whose children are registered in our childcare.

CAN I JOIN TO ONLY ATTEND EVENTS?

You may join for any reason but we do not offer discounted dues for members who know they do not plan to attend meetings. We encourage everyone to join for meetings because that’s where so much of our deep and meaningful connection happens

WHAT IF I CAN’T AFFORD DUES?

Each year we offer a limited number of scholarships provided by leadership fundraising and generous donors. Scholarships cover all costs with the exception of the $37 Mops International membership fee. If you are in need of a scholarship or would like more information about scholarships please contact our Finance Coordinator, Sophia, at momcoportlandfinance@gmail.com.
